Honor thy father and mother

Thought for the day:

God gave us 10 commandments to live by.  Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments.  Of these ten commandments that God gave us, there was only one that came with a promise.  It was the commandment to honor your father and mother.  God told us that if we would honor our father and mother that he would give us long life

Exodus 20:12 

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Ephesians 6:2

Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

Children today have not been taught the commandments of God.  They have not been brought up to honor God or to keep his commandments.  This is one of the biggest things wrong in today’s world.  Respect starts at home and if we don’t teach our children to respect their parents then how are we to expect them to go out into the world and respect anyone else.  It all starts with respect.  If you teach your children respect, then they won’t lie, they won’t steal, they won’t kill, in other words, if you teach them this commandment, to honor their father and mother, to have respect, then they will keep the other nine because of this one. 

The bible is full of scriptures about the importance of honoring your parents.  God thought it so important that he made it one of the ten commandments and even attached a promise to it.  If it was that important to God, don’t you think it should important to you also. 

Deuteronomy 5:16 

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Exodus 21:15 

And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

Exodus 21:17 

And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

Proverbs 1:8

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Proverbs 10:1

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Proverbs 19:26

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

Proverbs 30:11

There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

Mathew 15:4

For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Luke 18:20

Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
