Is
there a difference between the soul and the spirit? To answer this question you must go to God's word. The primary meaning of the words, soul and spirit is invisible force. These two words are so closely related that it is hard to distinguish the difference between the two of them but there is a difference.
We are a spirit being, we live in a body and we possess a soul
1 Thessalonians 5:23 And
the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and
soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:12 For
the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
In general you could say that the spirit is that which
knows.
1 Corinthians 2:11 For
what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?
even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
And the soul is that which feels.
Job 14:22 But
his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
The spirit is what allows us to have an intimate relationship with God. The spirit connects with God because God is a spirit.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Our spirit is
instantly reborn and made new the moment we accept Christ, but the soul is not
born again. Our souls are transformed by the renewing of our minds:
Romans 12: 2 And
be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your
mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of
God.
Ezekiel 36:26 A
new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I
will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart
of flesh.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.
I have a few more thoughts I want to get together and will update this post as I do. Have a blessed day.
